I wanted a clear and direct way of sharing information that wouldn’t deter people or be too much information to read. Recently I have seen many instagram ‘carousel’ posts sharing important information.
What is an Instagram carousel?
An Instagram carousel is a post with multiple photos / videos that can be viewed by swiping left. Up to 10 images can be added which is ideal to share information as all images are in one place. Instagram carousels get on average 3.1x more engagement (which isn’t a reason to post work, however it is beneficial for a campaign.)
Key Insights from Social Insider
– https://www.socialinsider.io/blog/instagram-carousel-research/
- 19.44% of Instagram posts are carousels, a significant growth compared to approximately 4% recorded when they were first available.
- Carousels are the most engaging Instagram posts: 1.92% average engagement per post.
- The most common carousels have two slides (33.10%) or three slides (19.69%), but some carousels use the maximum number of slides (6.77%).
- When making use of all ten slides available, the average engagement rate per carousel goes over 2%.
- While image carousels are more frequent (88.8%), carousels that mix images with videos bring the highest engagement rates per post – on average 2.33%.
- 4.9% of carousels have messages that encourage users to swipe left, and they perform better, bringing the average engagement rate from 1.83% to 2%
Designing
My aim was to create some eye catching pieces with enough text but not too much to deter people away, I also wanted to include illustrations on my posts to make sure they weren’t just text and to make them not look too generic.
I decided how to do the backgrounds using Gouache as it was a quick method of creating gradients with colours, here were the results:

I created some illustrations I could use across the pages.
My information had been separated in three categories for 3 different carousels that I intended on making.
The first carousel is based on : how the pandemic has affected Period Poverty in the Uk
The second : Facts about Period Poverty
The third is to show how periods have continued to be a taboo over the years. Unfortunately I didn’t finish this one, however I still have the information so If I get a chance I will continue to work on it. I will then add it to the post if I update it.
Text
I wanted to try an effect on the text which I created through :
- Gaussian Blur
- Rasterize
- Image Trace
I really liked how the text turned out. As the point of my images were to convey text I made sure to have the text be eligible, otherwise they would be pointless. I had to keep the gaussian blur at a low level. I also experimented with making the text thinner. I also experimented with type on a path for my typeface ‘Flow’ to make the appearance more exciting than just text on a page.
The illustrations I created for the carousels

Carousel 2:
I still want to add details to the second carousel to make them more unique, as I haven’t had the time just yet. However I am very happy with how my first Carousel turned out.
