I began this project thinking I would be creating many various outcomes for this project however throughout this project I have changed my mind many times on what could bring each piece together.
As the deadline was approaching I began to panic that my work didn’t feel like it belonged as a set and that there were loose ends, such as gifs, illustrations and a typeface surrounding period poverty but that were not being put into action or context.
I thought back to one of my group tutorials and remembered that a part of my feedback was to appeal to various age brackets as even most adults don’t understand or comprehend the situation surrounding Period poverty. Many issues can slip by unless you decide to do the research yourself and as periods are a taboo issue, this is a topic that can easily slip through the cracks. I however decided to bring the issue to the forefront of the papers.
Different audiences
I already have started the campaign on Instagram which aids me to reach many people and share the message however it isn’t likely to reach everyone on Instagram as the largest share of Instagram users were individuals aged between 25 and 34 years old. According to my account demographics the age category is mainly between ages 18-34. Of people who view my account. Analysing this information and thinking back to the group crit I decided I needed a different way of approaching more people and an older demographic. I then had the idea to print my work in the style of a newspaper. My idea behind this was that older generations are more likely to read a newspaper or something physical than something digital. I enjoy creating editorial images and this can bring my ideas to life. This idea also brings the campaign full circle as some of those who cannot afford menstrual products resort to using newspapers instead. This highlights the issue to the reader as they can physically see and feel the difference. Newspapers are made to highlight important issues and I want to bring this taboo issue to the forefront of people’s minds.
My aim is to create the paper in a creative, informal way like a magazine/zine but printed on a newsprint. I am then able to tie together my images and my very own typeface into one final physical thing and to reintroduce my project as a campaign.
I will also be taking inspiration from some others from my course on how I will be displaying the final piece. I have decided to use a washing line to peg it up to keep the theme of dirty washing (such as underwear on a line).
