In reflection to the recent workshop/ talk with Anna Steinberg I feel a lot clearer on issues such as copyright and pricing.
In the past we have had talks about these subjects from people such as the AOI which were very informative, however I find that I retain the information better the more I hear these topics.
The main points I took from the copyright section were :
- If you work for a company the company have copyright of your work
- Never sell the copyright (apart from a few exceptions such as Logo designs, an appropriate fee, stamps and in industries such as the film industry)
- Put your name in the file name and metadata so you don’t become detached from your work
The main points I took from the Pricing section were :
- Pricing goes up depending on the size/scale the image will be (i.e double page spread will be more than a small image in the corner)
- Avoid day rates (apart from animation, storyboarding, or something physical such as window painting)
- Doesn’t matter how long it took you, it matters how much the illustration exploited
- Never price to low
- Don’t bottle it (you’ll miss out on money and it devalues the industry)
Main points about writing a letter of complaint:
- Write out how you feel and then take out the angry stuff and rewrite it
- Keep it formal
- Don’t mention court action but imply that you are building up the case -i.e them not replying , log every encounter, take everyones name , be active not passive
Overall I found the talk very informative and helpful. The notes I took will come in useful for future practice.
