Period Poverty Project – RESEARCH

Ideas

After my last project I wanted this project to be similar, along the lines of looking at branding and a subject surrounding women.

As I had already looked at :

  • Film posters + Women in the film industry
  • Packaging branding + Beauty standards over the years

I wanted to find a new subject, I came up with a few mind maps exploring different posible feminist themes I could look at such as women in politics, women in sport and period poverty.

I researched into each and found period poverty the one that picked my attention the most. I managed to find many videos including these:

Research

Which I found really inspiring and informative. These videos and many charities help contribute to tackling the problem. I also watched I, Daniel Blake which includes a woman who’s living under the breadline and so cannot afford sanitary products. After this film came out in 2017 food banks were flooded with donations of sanitary products as a response to the film. To find more information I try to stick to charities or reliable sources to make sure my information is correct and factual.

I found some shocking facts which include:

Which really made me want to find out more about this harsh reality and hopefully use my illustrations to help fix the situation. I aim to do this by bringing awareness to the situation and hopefully to create a campaign to help change this reality.

My Outcome Ideas

I want to create a series of outcomes for my project which will be:

  • Social Media images (slide)
  • Gif/ Animations
  • Packaging
  • Posters
  • Zines

I also want to use a mixture of traditional media and digital media to create these outcomes, hopefully I can screen print a few outcomes.

I also aim to combine both, my current project and last project together, by making an additional box for my last project about periods I can create a “period box” and include products/ packaging from my current project in the box too, bringing both projects full circle.
