Our final project this year was to create a project using The Tempest by Shakespeare as a catalyst.
Research
I found this quite tricky at the beginning as I knew I wanted to look into branding. However, after doing some research into the plot, themes and characters of The Tempest I discovered that perception is a strong theme in the play.
Perception
Branding is the image of the brand and therefore, how the brand is perceived by the audience. Branding can bring in different customers or attract a new demographic to the brand.
After discovering a link I then moved on to finding brands I could work with. I decided to approach brands rather than create my own as I wanted to channel their brand image. I decided on using two different brands from North Wales as they are both local, and I believe it’s important to support small local businesses. They both are completely different which I liked as I could push my visual language and versatility, through creating different outcomes for either brand.
Brands
The brands I contacted were :
- Tiny Trinkets by Tash (@TinyTrinkets_)
- Arfordir (@Arfordir_)
Tiny Trinkets
Tiny Trinkets is a brand new jewellery brand, from Flintshire, North Wales run by Natasha Toone. Tiny Trinkets create beautiful bespoke handmade jewellery using pressed flowers and resin.

Natasha gave me some input into colour palette, typeface and imagery suggestions for the branding. She told me that she liked muted colours, retro fonts and quite natural imagery.
I then created 3 mood boards exploring these options.

After confirming with Natasha that she was happy with the mood boards I started sketching out designs. I looked at variations of leaves, shapes and compiled these into logo ideas. After trying them out in every way I decided on the best one and I checked with Natasha if she was happy with the design and if there were any changes. Only one change was needed which was to add ‘By Tash’ on the logo. Which didn’t affect the design at all and was easy to incorporate in.
Designs
Here are some of my developments :

Logos
This was my final design.

Packaging cards
I created some illustrations for packaging cards that I could contain info on the brand, a thank you note or a discount code.
I created one with three of the earring designs which I really enjoyed doing and I’m very pleased with how it turned out. Making them look like a transparent object was quite tricky but I think it worked out quite well.

Business Cards
I decided to create business cards also. Here were my developments

And these were my final designs.

Arfordir
Arfordir is a Welsh clothing company from Anglesey, North Wales. They design and sell unisex clothing such as fleeces, jumpers and t-shirts. From their current branding you can, they are very proud of being from Anglesey. I wanted to incorporate this into my illustrations as it is a big part of the brand.
Arfordir translates to Coast in English which links perfectly to The Tempest.
Input
Arfordir gave me free rein for this project. I found this more challenging however it really made me consider designs and ideas and study the brand.

I began by looking closely at the imagery of the coast and the sea however I decided it wasn’t working and so I decided to look into Anglesey itself. I looked at the mountain views and the Menai bridge. After a few sketches, I came up with a design I was really happy with and made into a final piece.

My final design :

Packaging cards
I also created packaging cards for Arfordir. I drew some of their clothing. I wanted the focus to mainly be on the clothing so I left out the heads and faces as I didn’t want them to draw the attention away from the clothes.
These were my thumbnails. However I decided to create different images for the final piece as I thought they worked better:

These were my outcomes:

I am really happy with the way these turned out. I have learnt a lot from this project. I have learnt more about design and colour and how to apply that to a specific brand and I am very pleased with the outcome.
